Scotland launches initiative to cut HGV emissions

Industry News

19 November 2025/Categories: Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain, Net-Zero

A new consortium called SCALE (Scotland Charging to Accelerate Logistics Electrification) has been established to reduce heavy goods vehicle emissions, which currently account for 12.8% of Scotland's CO₂ output.

Led by charging solutions company Voltempo and supported by Transport Scotland's £2 million HGV Market Readiness Fund, the initiative brings together Scottish hauliers and logistics partners to accelerate the adoption of electric HGVs.

Key participants include Creel Maritime, through its Net Zero Timhaul partnership with Scotlog, and James Jones & Sons. The programme will test electric vehicles ranging from 7.5 to 44 tonnes across various demanding applications, including food distribution, parcel deliveries to remote communities, and medical supply transport.

SCALE plans to establish a community-owned charging network, with shared hubs supporting fleets of all sizes. Financial support packages will be available, particularly for smaller operators.

Voltempo founder Michael Boxwell said: "Scotland has the vision, and now the opportunity, to accelerate the transition to zero-emission freight and we are delighted to be leading SCALE, a consortium specifically designed to give hauliers the confidence, the infrastructure and the support they need to make the switch to electric."

Transport Scotland will review the proposal in early 2026, with rollout expected later that year.
