HGV zero emission transition consultation

Industry News

19 January 2026/Categories: Industry News, Freight Forwarding, Logistics & Supply Chain, Operations Management, Net-Zero

The Department for Transport (DfT) is consulting on new regulations to reduce CO2 emissions from heavy goods vehicles and support the transition to zero-emission HGVs. The government aims to phase out sales of new non-zero emission HGVs up to 26 tonnes by 2035, with all HGVs following by 2040.

The consultation examines regulatory options, vehicle categorisation, emissions reduction targets, and technical criteria for 'zero emission' classification. Officials are seeking stakeholder input on the most effective framework to achieve these ambitious targets whilst supporting industry transition.

Views are needed to inform policy design and ensure regulations balance environmental goals with practical implementation. This represents a significant shift in transport decarbonisation policy.

Respond by 17 March 2026 via email (hgvconsultation@dft.gov.uk) or post to the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles.
