Peterborough station welcomes addition of polystyrene platform

14 February 2014/Categories: Industry News

Peterborough's train station has welcomed the the addition of a modular polystyrene platform.

The new technology has only been trialled once before in the UK, despite being used regularly across the continent. Network Rail claimed using the material had greatly improved safety levels on the project and had generated little waste.

Adopting this new approach meant that the work could be carried out four times quicker than a traditional build and three times faster than a steel modular structure. This is due to the fact there was no need for foundations to be built.

The platform was constructed using 30 polystyrene blocks and matching concrete surface panels. It is anticipated the new structure will have a design life of 60 years. Network Rail chose to go ahead with the ambitious project so that it could be fitted around the 20-week construction timeframe that was given for the platform extension to be carried out.

Programme manager Steve Coe commented: "The modular design and speed of build generated real tangible benefits to the project and it's a method I would certainly consider adopting for future projects."

The new structure is part of Network Rail's Peterborough investment project.
