Haulage firms urged to help flood-stricken farmers

14 February 2014/Categories: Industry News

Haulage companies have been urged to help farmers affected by the UK's floods.

According to Commercial Motor, firms are required to deliver items such as hay and silage to Somerset, which has been particularly hit by the heavy rain. Andrew Ward, founder of the Forage Aid charity, stated he had received donations from all over the country and needed help with distribution.

Although he is already receiving support from several haulage companies, he has called for more organisations to get involved with the project. This is because the cost of transporting forage is relatively high and so if more firms take part, the financial burden can be shared.

Large companies such as Tesco are also assisting flood-stricken farmers. Its lorries have delivered animal feed and it has also set up a helpline. The firm's distribution team has been working in close cooperation with Thames Valley Police and have been heavily involved in transporting sandbags to be affected areas.

A spokesman for the company added: "We will continue to deliver feed bales each day and have hundreds ready to distribute. We expect to deliver around 840 bales this week."

Forage Aid was set up in April 2013, in response to upland sheep farmers losing hundreds of their livestock during the lambing season. Andrew Ward was named Farmers Weekly Farm Champion of the year for his efforts.
