Heathrow could be accessed by a direct rail link by 2021.
This is according to Network Rail, which was given the task to come up with proposals to provide a new connection from the Great Western main line to the airport.
It is hoped that providing direct access to Heathrow will offer passengers quicker travel times, while providing a boost for the economy. The proposals are also expected to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce the effect the airport has on local communities.
Network Rail officials met with MPs and other stakeholders to discuss the plans, known as the Western Rail Access Programme. It will allow passengers to travel from Reading, via Slough to Heathrow.
Patrick Hallgate, Network Rail managing director of the Western route, commented: "It's important that we take the opportunity to discuss these plans so we can ensure the investment made in a bigger, better railway delivers maximum benefit."
Currently, passengers have to travel into London Paddington, before changing trains on to a direct link to Heathrow.
