DP World London Gateway has doubled its lifting capacity.
It has become the first port in the country to be able to lift four crates at a time on its quay cranes. This means its spreader can now handle four 20ft or two 40ft containers simultaneously, which is said to greatly increase the efficiency and productivity of the site.
Engineering director Andrew Bowen said: "The culture at DP World London Gateway encourages us to innovate and improve supply chains and we look forward to continuous improvements in the future."
The site, which is the first 21st century major deep-sea container port in the UK, opened on 7th November 2013 and was one of the only ports that remained operational throughout the bad weather over Christmas. During this time, four ships were diverted to it from their previous destinations. One of them, the Maersk Gudrun, was the largest container vessel to ever sail up the Thames.
