The Department for Transport (DfT) has published a call for evidence on advanced fuels, inviting views on viable forms of fuel.
Advanced fuel refers to any low-carbon source which is capable of replacing the current fossil fuels. Using these cleaner options will allow DfT to cut down on emissions across the transport sector.
Transport minister Susan Kramer said: "Over a fifth of UK carbon emissions come from transport. That’s why it’s crucial we develop sustainable low-carbon fuels so that we can keep Britain moving while meeting our emissions targets."
Biofuels are one such example, but there has been a cap on production from the European Union (EU), due to concerns over the resources required, which are currently widely used in the food industry.
DfT's call for evidence builds on a £25 million competition for a demonstration plant capable of producing advanced fuels, announced earlier this year. The document will look for ways to develop and encourage this contest and the benefits for any potential technologies uncovered.
