Rail services will be reduced today (December 5th) as a result of storms in the UK.

Network Rail has decided to cut trains in Scotland, which is anticipating winds of up to 95 miles per hour (mph) during peak commute times, and in Yorkshire and the north-east of England, where 80 mph gales have been forecast.

It has advised passengers in these parts to check if their service is still running and, even if it is, a slower journey time should be expected.

Route managing director for Network Rail Phil Verster said: "The speeds of wind predicted for tomorrow means we expect debris to be blown onto the railway. By running trains at reduced speed we give drivers time to react safely to any obstacles on the line."

Engineers will be out today to provide quick solutions, such as removing fallen trees, throughout the day. Blown objects could also damage equipment, such as signals and overhead power lines.

Network Rail will monitor its system of weather alarms to track the storm as it passes.
