Network Rail will be starting a new trial of parcel stores inside mainline stations.
This collection and delivery service, known as Doddle, is a joint initiative between Network Rail and entrepreneur Lloyd Dorfman.
Primary tests will be conducted at Milton Keynes Central station, which is already close to various delivery operations, before expanding to London Paddington and Woking stations. More locations will be planned for 2014 should the concept prove successful at the three facilities.
A spokesperson for the rail authority said: "The service would be the only one of its kind that is available to every retailer, e-tailer, parcel carrier and shipper, creating a network of single points for the collection, return and sending of parcels."
Project director Peter Louden stated reception has been positive due to the prime locations and guaranteed footfall offered by the stations. It expects passenger volumes to increase 30 per cent by 2020, growing the amount potentially exposed to the service.
This move will help busy individuals pick up deliveries while travelling and a similar service has already been implemented by ASDA, which has six 'click and collect' points on the London Underground.
Network Rail will invest any revenue it generates from Doddle into improving train infrastructure.
