Amazon 'may be considering' 110,000 sq m centre

15 November 2013/Categories: Industry News

Liverpool City Council is considering plans for a 110,000 sq m distribution centre and storage space, with news suggesting it could be taken up by Amazon.

The current application wants to see it built it within a 22 hectare site at Stonebridge Cross and it is thought the warehouse facility alone can provide up to 1,000 jobs.

If true, the choice could make a lot of sense. Although recent distribution news has been at the likes of London Gateway, which has on-site centres available, Liverpool's advantage is its sea-facing position to the US and Southern America. With recent developments such as the Liverpool 2 port, it makes sense for companies to establish operations in this part of the UK as well.

Liverpool's mayor Joe Anderson said: "Securing planning approval will be a vital piece in the jigsaw in securing an end user in this very fast moving sector of the economy."

A spokesperson for Amazon said the company "does not comment on speculation or rumour".
