The mayor of London Boris Johnson will trial a scheme with buses running on biofuel.

More than 120 public transport vehicles, across ten routes, are currently powered by a source involving food waste and cooking oil to help reduce carbon emissions without needing to make changes to the buses.

Running from the depot in Barking, these services use 80 per cent diesel fuel, with 20 per cent biodiesel, which will cut emissions by around 15 per cent. This is mixed on-site using a new 50,000 litre storage tank.

Senior advisor for environment and energy to the mayor Matthew Pencharz said: “This is another example of the mayor’s commitment to cutting carbon emissions and making our city’s transport even cleaner and greener."

However, the Liberal Democrat environment spokesman for London Stephen Knight told the Evening Standard he is opposed to the scheme, claiming it is a "gimmick" and Mr Johnson should be focusing on electric buses instead.
