Transport for London (TfL) is set to trial a scheme designed to cut crowds on the Northern Line.

Starting on Monday (November 11th), stations along the line will provide information on how changing to a quieter train can reduce their trip or make it more comfortable.

TfL reports the section between Tooting Bec and Clapham North gets busy between 08:00 and 08:45 GMT, with some passengers having to wait two or more services just to find one they can get on.

It is part of a wider programme, based on schemes during the 2012 Olympic Games, which could be spread out at a later date. The project raises strong issues of congestion in London - something which is only going to increase in the future. Other schemes, such as Thameslink and Crossrail, are aiming to help provide improved connections and cope with expected demand.

The Northern Line is also being updated with upgraded signalling systems for more numerous, quicker services, raising capacity by 20 per cent when work is finished in 2014.

Director of strategy and service development for London Underground Gareth Powell said: "By making a small change to the time they travel our passengers' journeys could be faster and more comfortable."
