Vehicle manufacturing 'better than last year'

24 October 2013/Categories: Industry News

Vehicle production is already 3.9 per cent ahead of last year's output in the UK.

This is according to a report published today (October 24th) by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Car production was said to be strong with 140,888 built in the month, bringing the current year's total to 1,125,433 - a figure already 3.9 per cent above that of 2012.

Truck manufacturing in the UK outperformed other sectors of commercial vehicle (CV) production.

Yet the body reports that CV output is dropping, as only 6,963 were made in September - a decline of 27.5 per cent.

Chief executive for SMMT Mike Hawes said: "CV production remained subdued in September, with continuing uncertainty in the EU and restructuring of UK operations."

The findings also coincide with a speech by British High Commissioner to India Sir James Bevan, which praises the UK manufacturing industry.

Talking at a Formula One event, Sir James said the UK's car industry is making more vehicles than ever, exporting to more than 100 countries. The country is home to 19 of the top 20 vehicle manufacturers in the world, as well as being home to the first mass-produced zero emissions car - the Nissan Leaf.
