Boris Johnson has spoken in favour of his plan for a Thames Island airport during a trip to Hong Kong.

The Mayor of London visited Chep Lap Kok airport, which was also built on an island featuring reclaimed land at the northern tip of Lantau island.

He said: "The Chinese authorities have clearly figured out that aviation is absolutely key to economic growth and they are building a legion of mega-airports that will link them to every market in the world."

The main options in consideration for increasing capacity in London are Mr Johnson's proposed island airport or a third runway at Heathrow, which he believes would disturb those living in west London.

Other possibilities include adding additional runways at London Gatwick or Stansted. The Airports Commission recently rejected the Stop Stansted Expansion's request for a judicial review, leaving the possibility of upgrading Stansted open.

Mr Johnson believes expanding Heathrow would not be suitable for accessing new mega-airports from London, while also having a negative influence on local residents. Instead he prefers the construction of a Thames Island airport - which would be further away from heavily populated areas.
