£62m Metro unveiled for south Wales

10 October 2013/Categories: Industry News

The Welsh government has announced plans for a £62 million Metro system that will connect areas across south Wales.

Draft budget proposals were published by finance minister Jane Hutt, with a three-year plan in place for the development. It will see around £3.5 million spent this year, £28.7 million in 2014-2015 and £29.8 million in 2015-2016.

A lot of the new network will focus around Cardiff, improving infrastructure and transport options within the city, as well as offering links to surrounding areas such as Newport. It will be a combination of bus and rail links.

Ms Hutt said the government would "take every opportunity to use European funding to maximise our investments in essential infrastructure that support growth and jobs across Wales".

The plans come as part of a wider £617.5 million scheme for projects across the country. Aside from the Metro development, £40 million will be spent converting sections of the A465 into a dual road, £17 million is earmarked for improving the A55 in north Wales and another £40 million is going to improve the Brynglas Tunnels on the M4.
