Chair of the Airports Commission Sir Howard Davies has stated the organisation wants more capacity for air transport in the UK.

The group believes airports are likely to face growing pressure - with particular focus in the south-east of England - even if demand is restricted through climate change regulations. It states current airports will not be able to take in all additional demand.

As a solution, it suggests adding a new runway to the infrastructure in the south-east region within the upcoming decades. Recent news has seen much discussion with Heathrow applying for a third runway - Boris Johnson was one of a number of people against this expansion, instead favouring a new airport in the greater London area.

Sir Horward said that - whether a new runway is built or not - the UK would need to manage its emissions to meet its carbon targets.

The commission is currently welcoming responses in regards to a new runway. The Airports Commission was set up in November 2012 with a goal of providing assessment for the UK's hub status, as well as advising on runway capacity by the end of this year.
