Heathrow's plans for expansion - including a third runway - may be flawed according to submissions to the Davies commission.

According to the Financial Times, the road and train network in the capital would not be able to keep up with demand from a rising population or an expanding airport. Heathrow's plans for a third runway would add an annual 30 million passengers by 2030, and 60 million by 2040.

Similar arguments are also being made to counter proposals from Gatwick and Stansted airports.

The mayor of London Boris Johnson said there were no new plans to upgrade the road infrastructure, adding that any "rail improvements already underway are needed to meet the pressures on our transport network being generated by the extraordinary growth in population of our city".

Heathrow has argued that, through changing its staff's travel behaviour, it could increase the use of public-transport to avoid adding more traffic as a result of the airport by 2030.
