Network Rail has started construction of a new signalling and training centre today (September 27th) in Basingstoke.
Once complete, it will control large regions of the rail network in London and the south-west.
Basingstoke MP Maria Miller said: "It will improve train services and help to create extra capacity on the railway. It is also a really important investment in the safety and efficiency of the rail network in the region."
Advanced technology will help reduce delays while improving capacity and performance. This will include routes between the south coast and London Waterloo - one of the busiest in the UK.
The centre is one of 12 being built by Network Rail across the UK as part of a new process to direct trains, replacing 800 signal boxes and older facilities. All new centres are expected to be fully operational in the upcoming 30 years and Network Rail predicts they will save the company £2.5 billion over 60 years.
