Ed Balls has expressed concern over the cost of HS2.
Speaking at the Labour conference, the shadow chancellor claimed his party still supports the project, but he called the £50 billion costs of the project into question.
He said the debate was over "not just whether a new high speed line is a good idea or a bad idea, but whether it is the best way to spend £50 billion for the future of our country".
The approach taken by David Cameron and George Osborne was seen as "irresponsible" due to increased costs. He believes they will go ahead with the project regardless of expenses 'spiralling up'. In his opinion, the outlay does not represent the best value for money available. It was also suggested that HS2 might not be the biggest priority.
Mr Balls confirmed the party supports investment in new transport options for the future, including a link between the north and south of England. HS2 was originally introduced under the Labour government.
