Tesco has experienced problems in its supply chains after two pork chops marketed as being British were revealed to have come from the Netherlands.
The BBC purchased a number of goods from Tesco and tested them using Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis - the method used by the British Pig Executive. This found that two pork chops had a less than one per cent chance of coming from the UK as labelled.
This demonstrates how important it is for firms to keep track of their distribution and supply chains. Similar to the recent horse meat scandal, the outsourcing of supply chains means companies do not have as much control over their products.
Associate professor of operations management at Warwick Business School Mark Johnson said: "All firms use suppliers to provide products and services, creating complex, lengthy and opaque supply chains."
Tesco stated it was looking into implemented the analysis methods used to better inspect and control its food goods. A spokesperson said: "We have spoken with our supplier to make clear that this mistake is unacceptable."
