The European Commission (EC) has announced new proposals to encourage freight on canals and rivers.

It argues that barges are climate-friendly and energy efficient transportation options, yet only carry around six per cent of European annual cargo. EC claims its new measures will encourage more freight via barges, in turn allowing cargo to be moved easier.

Siim Kallas, EC vice-president responsible for transport, said: "We already send 500 million tonnes of freight along our rivers and canals each year.

"We need to help the waterway transport industry develop over the longer term into a high quality sector."

The proposal outlined includes addressing 'bottlenecks' in the waterways, such as bridges, inadequate locks and missing connections. New guidelines will prioritise funding for inland waterways.

It is also proposing new standards and measures for engines, with an aim to push investment in low emission technology.

A skilled workforce will also need to be trained as the sector grows, as well as establishing connections with road and rail. Emphasis will also be given to connecting river and sea ports.
