Global shipping meeting at Downing Street

09 September 2013/Categories: Industry News

Global leaders in the shipping and maritime industries are meeting with ministers at Downing Street today (September 9th) to discuss Britain's position in the sector.

The Department for Transport (DfT) notes that shipping has continued growth in the UK and has more than tripled gross tonnage over the last ten years. It also notes employment for shipping has gone from 73,000 in 2004 to 146,000 in 2011.

Discussions will take place up to September 12th and coincide with London Shipping Week.

Chairman of Maritime UK  Jim Stewart said: "We have the largest shipping companies, most innovative port operators and most comprehensive list of maritime business services companies, all based in the UK."

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has also announced an increase in the government's Support for Maritime Training programme from £12 million up to £15 million over the Spending Review period leading to the end of the 2015-2016 financial year. DfT claims this will support 200 more trainees a year.
