UK enjoys strongest growth for logistics

23 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

Logistics in the UK experienced almost three-fold growth for the second quarter of the year - higher than any other country.

The study from Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) claims development levels are at a high last experienced in 2007-08.

Recovery of the economy, in addition to high retail demand, allowed logistics such strong growth. While the UK figures were exceptionally high, take-up in France, Russia and Poland also more than doubled.

Some 2.1 million metres squared of developments began construction in this period, with a further seven million under development.

Associate director of EMEA logistics and industrial research at JLL Alexandra Tornow said: "Developers remain risk-sensitive and although we see further significant occupier demand in the remainder of the year, we do not anticipate a strong return in speculative development."

She also stated that speculative development is likely to stay limited to specific markets, highlighting the UK and Germany as examples.

Additional factors were put down to retail companies favouring multi-channel distribution more, as well as supply chains responding to patterns from customers and manufacturing. These large scale transactions helped to grow the industry.
