Plans are currently in development to improve capacity at London Waterloo station by 15 per cent.

Lead by the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance, the development looks to improve a number of factors - such as passenger capacity and the length of platforms - designed to accommodate more carriages.

Additionally, extra trains and improvements to signalling and the power supply are being included. This also incorporates bringing terminals from Waterloo International back into use; platform 20 is expected to be operational by spring next year.

Managing director of the South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance Tim Shoveller said: "The huge success of the railway in the UK means it will get significantly busier in the next two decades and beyond".

Currently, the alliance operates around 1,700 trains per day through Waterloo, amounting to nearly 210 million passengers per year. This is expected to rise to 380 million by 2030 as increased growth in rail travel is expected.

The plans are currently expected to be finished by 2019.
