Developers working on the Crossrail project have confirmed the completion of the westbound cavern 40 metres below the ground in Stepney Green.
This comes just three months after the eastbound tunnel was finished and it seems the network is on schedule to be up and running by 2018.
The Stepney Green caverns are among the largest ever constructed in Europe using a tunneling technique known as Sprayed Concrete Lining and they are around 17 metres wide, 15 metres high and 50 metres long.
It is a crucial part of the overall development as it is where the railway divides into the north-east spur and south-east spur.
Last month, Crossrail published figures that showed the project and its supply chain will create 75,000 business opportunities and support 55,000 full time jobs across the UK.
The total amount of funding being made available for Crossrail is £14.8 billion and the government is confident the new line will make London far more accessible, delivering untold economic benefits in the process.
