The government will invest a further £7.2 million into road improvements in parts of Cumbria.

Many highways across the county have been in a sorry state since the devastating floods of 2009 and this has made life difficult for logistics companies that have been attempting to make deliveries in the north-west.

However, transport secretary Patrick Mcloughlin confirmed that Cumbria County Council will be given a significant funding boost, allowing it to make extensive repairs to numerous roads, including Main Street in Cockermouth.

"Reliable local highways are crucial to communities and provides important links for people to work, shops, services, families and friends," he commented.

This is the final instalment of government funding and to date the authorities have spent £18 million on road improvements in Cumbria.

The Department for Transport is keen to enhance the nation's road infrastructure and new laws were recently introduced that essentially ensure significant sums of money will be spent on upgrades in the future.
