Airports Commission 'needs to move quickly'

07 August 2013/Categories: Industry News

Chair of the Airports Commission Sir Howard Davies said the group will have to move quickly to whittle down the potential options for increasing the UK's runway capacity.

The government body has received a multitude of proposals and suggestions on the most effective ways to make more space in the country's airports.

Mr Davies said the wide range of plans highlights just how many different opinions there are on the matter.

Options include extending Heathrow, adding runways at Gatwick and Stansted and building a brand new hub airport just outside of London.

The Airports Commission must take several factors into account before it makes a final decision, such as cost, air pollution, noise levels and the strength of existing infrastructure.

Mr Davies urged people to continue submitting recommendations in order to help the committee make an informed choice.

"The timetable to comment is tight, as we need to move quickly to winnow down the options and reduce uncertainty for potentially affected communities," he commented.
