A number of leading automotive organisations are urging vehicle owners to adapt their driving style in order to make huge savings on fuel.

The AA, Guild of Motoring Writers, Institute of Advanced Motorists, Motor Codes, British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), RAC and Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have joined forces to promote fuel-efficient driving.

They believe making just a few easy changes could help people slash their petrol and diesel use by 20 per cent - saving the nation £6.8 billion a year.

Professional drivers who work for logistics companies will be keen to try some of the tips, as many firms are desperately attempting to shield themselves against rising fuel prices.

Motoring journalist Quentin Willson said gentle pedal pressure, watching the trip computer and planning ahead can enable motorists to reduce their fuel consumption.

"Everybody can make a dramatic difference to their mpg if they learn the simple craft of driving economically," he remarked.

BVRLA chief executive Gerry Keaney believes UK companies already have some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles at their disposal, but are failing to make the most of their green fleet because employees are driving them uneconomically.
