Could the A14 be turned into a toll road?

17 June 2013/Categories: Industry News

Haulage company bosses are concerned about proposals to turn parts of the A14 into a toll road.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, Paul Dawson from Deben Transport said his firm refuses to pay these fees unless a customer is willing to cover the costs.

In his opinion, the organisation already pays enough to the government through road tax and fuel duty and forcing drivers to pay to access the A14 would be a bad move.

Toll roads are commonplace in some European countries, but the select few that have sprung up in the UK have divided motorists. While some think they are useful in reducing congestion, others believe they are a rip off.

"The M6 toll road is getting less and less use - so much so that the government is considering absorbing it into the normal road network," Mr Dawson was quoted as saying.

Plans are in place to upgrade the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon, which is notorious for being gridlocked during rush-hours.
