Eurotunnel to appeal 'incomprehensible' ferry ruling

07 June 2013/Categories: Industry News

Bosses at Groupe Eurotunnel have confirmed they will "immediately appeal" the Competition Commission's decision to ban the firm from operating ferries from Dover to Calais.

The authority ruled yesterday (June 6th) that the introduction of the MyFerryLink service could lead to increased fares. The commission was also concerned the firm's market share of cross-Channel transport options would surpass the 50 per cent mark.

However, Groupe Eurotunnel chiefs have labelled the ruling "incomprehensible and seriously disproportionate".

The company thinks the decision is not based on concrete facts and is a contradiction of Europe's freedom of movement ethos.

In addition to this, the organisation believes the Competition Commission is depriving the ports of Dover and Calais of much needed revenue.

Jacques Gounon, chairman and chief executive officer of Groupe Eurotunnel, said: "This decision by the Competition Commission will reduce the choice of services across the Straits of Dover to the detriment of the consumer."
