Asda unveils new AutoStore facility

06 June 2013/Categories: Industry News

Asda has opened one of the UK's largest AutoStore facilities in the Leicestershire town of Lutterworth.

The supermarket giant called in logistics solutions specialist Swisslog to create a more advanced goods retrieval system at the large distribution centre.

It is imperative that any inefficiencies within a supply chain are ironed out and Asda will hope its new-look site will make its operations more efficient.

Thanks to the new system, Asda employees will be able to pick goods at twice the current rate, with an accuracy of 99.8 per cent.

Ant Everett, head of engineering and capacity at Asda Logistics Services, said the firm looked at a number of ways to maximise the potential of its distribution centres.

"The ability to re-engineer the facility and build a space-efficient and ergonomic application was a key selection factor," he remarked.

Online retailing has heightened the demand for large warehouses and distribution centres in the UK with a number of renowned brands, including Aldi, Co-operative and Marks & Spencer joining Asda in making significant changes to their logistics operations in recent months.
