Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has hinted that the government could partially fund the building of a new £11 million railway station in Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

Mr McLoughlin suggested that £5 million could be made available through the New Stations Fund, which was launched in January 2013.

Back then, the government said it would make a total of £20 million available for "shovel ready" stations and the Kenilworth investment - should it go ahead - will be the single biggest allocation made through the project.

Network Rail recently announced it would spend £37 billion on infrastructure improvements between 2014 and 2019 and Mr McLoughlin is keen for new developments to get up and running.

"This is another example of the government's determination to transform the railways as we continue to push forward with the biggest programme of rail investment ever," he remarked.

The new Kenilworth station will be located on the Coventry to Leamington Spa line and will enable connections to London-bound services, as well as trains heading to towns and cities across the West Midlands.
