Port of Dunkirk to receive new logistics development

19 April 2013/Categories: Industry News

Plans for a new logistics development in Dunkirk have been submitted and work could begin in 2015.

Based in the Western Port area, the site will cover 75 hectares of land in total and it is hoped that the major project will encourage more firms to transfer parts of their business to the historic French coastal city.

Dunkerque-Port leaders said that 92,000 square metres of covered warehouses would be erected and 18 km of railway lines will also be built to serve the facility.

Once it is finished, the logistics hub is expected to see five freight trains transport goods to and from the complex each week and around 500 HGVs are predicted to use the park every day.

Located close the the Belgian border and within easy reach of the UK, Dunkirk is in an excellent position for companies that want to transport goods throughout Europe.

"This innovative infrastructure anticipates changes to the logistics chain for hazardous goods and reinforces inter-modal operations that encourage the use of consolidated transport modes," commented Claude Cadot, industrial development director of the Eiffage Construction Group - the firm tasked with developing the site.
