A major parcel carrier has unveiled impressive plans for a new £25 million distribution centre in the north-west of England.

Hermes is one company that appears to have defied the recession and the firm has now outgrown its current facilities.

The new 15,000 sq m complex will be three-times the size of the existing site in Warrington, Cheshire and the purpose-built hub will create 60 jobs.

Gary Winter, sales and marketing director at Hermes, said the firm needs a bigger distribution centre in order to cope with the soaring uptake of online shopping.

"The built in flexibility will allow us to meet any changing requirements our clients might have, such as later assured collection cut off times and a higher proportion of next-day delivery," he remarked.

Based by Junction 8 of the M62, the site - which will be capable of handling 560,000 parcels a day - has excellent links to the UK's road network.

This facility is due to open in April 2014 and it comes at a time when many logistics firms are complaining about a lack of investment in large-scale warehouses and distribution centres.
