On March 12th, 70 students from Nottingham Trent University along with representatives from local industries joined forces to learn and play the CILT sponsored Business on the Move board game. The event organised by Paul Wreaves the Nottinghamshire Regional Chair was a fantastic afternoon with students from Years 2, 3 and the MSc Supply Chain Management modules coming together to battle it out!.
The game, that centres on importing goods into the UK by plane and boat and then delivering them by rail or road pitched teams of four against each other. Faced with various challenges from piracy to carbon emission legislation the teams had to negotiate the global supply chain until a winner emerged. The students were joined by staff from Boots, Yusen Logistics and CILT, who were able to discuss logistics opportunities and careers with them.
The feedback from the students was extremely positive with many saying it had bought into focus the issues in modern day global logistics, albeit whilst having a fun afternoon. Representatives from the University commented that the game had been a valuable learning experience in their learning programme.
The afternoon was finished off by Rob Weightman, Operational Lead from Boots.com who gave a fascinating lecture on Black Friday. He described how the Boots team coped with the extraordinary increase in sales that the period created and how they have forward planned to ensure that service and quality are maintained during these peak periods.
