The Port of Felixstowe is expanding capacity with the introduction of two new rail-mounted gantry cranes.
Co-financed by the European Union Trans-European Transport Network programme, the Liebherr cranes will be used at the port's North Rail Terminal and will further cement Felixstowe's position as the biggest port in the UK.
A total of 890,000 TEU passed through the port's three rail terminals during 2014 and chief executive officer Clemence Cheng said its frequency of rail services makes it "a much more reliable and viable alternative to 17 destinations in the UK helping to reduce road congestion and allowing customers to strip carbon out of their supply chain".
Freight rail services run from Felixstowe to much of the UK, including major cities such as Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol.
Around 30 shipping lines operate from the port, connecting it to 365 destinations globally. It is aided by having some of the deepest water close to open sea of any of its European counterparts.
