A warning that the UK supply chain is in danger of collapsing has been issued by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).
It was noted that the increasing numbers of migrants has led to increasing checks on vehicles prior to embarkation at both ferry terminals and the Eurotunnel.
This has led to a slowdown in the processing of vehicles, which in turn has brought about a threat to the reliability of the UK supply chain to and from Europe.
International affairs manager for the FTA Donald Armour called on the government to insist French authorities take on a greater level of proactive involvement in the matter, to reduce the necessity of border checks.
"FTA's principle concern is the safety of drivers attempting to travel safely through the port and trying to avoid stowaways hitching a ride on a lorry into the UK," Mr Armour commented.
