UK first for PD Ports terminal operating system

17 June 2015/Categories: CILT, Ports, Maritime & Waterways

The UK’s first cross-platform terminal operating system has been implemented at Teesport.

Following the successful implementation of the new system across Teesport’s container terminals in 2013, the decision was taken to introduce the Ro-Ro module into the ferry operations the following year. The system is now integrated and fully operational.

This new technology built by Navis, a software development company specialising in terminal operating systems, allows the Port to operate from a single, unified platform across the container, rail and ferry operations.

PD Ports’ award-winning system further strengthens Teesport’s operational performance, providing real-time information for customers as well as increased productivity with regards to planning and reporting. Over 70% of containers handled at the Port can now be tracked to their owner, along with any specific requirements the owner has for their goods.

Frans Calje, PD Ports’ Managing Director Unitised and Portcentric Logistics, said: 'Being one of the world’s first ports to implement this system across our entire unitised platform demonstrates our commitment to providing a first class service to our customers and further strengthens our position as a key player in the UK ports sector.

'Our aim is to help our customers be more responsive to the end-user, offering greater visibility and improved turnaround times for goods handled at the port.  This will undoubtedly result in enhanced efficiencies and cost savings in our customer’s supply chains.'

In March 2015, PD Ports won an ‘Award of Recognition’ at the annual Navis awards ceremony, held in San Francisco. Trade magazine, Containerisation International has also shortlisted PD Ports for ‘Innovation of the Year’ at the prestigious award ceremony being held in London on 18th June.
