Network Rail bridge construction prompts earth-moving transport work

22 June 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Rail

Network Rail has completed construction work on a new road bridge which spans the existing Stafford to Crewe railway line at Norton Bridge.

In the wake of this development, workers are now tasked with moving 230,000 cubic metres of earth - enough material to fill almost 100 Olympic sized swimming pools.

This will be transported across the bridge, and 30 tons of earth will be moved at a time by articulated haulers crossing over existing railway lines within the development site.

Staffordshire Alliance - a partnership of Atkins, Laing O'Rourke, Network Rail and VolkerRail - is delivering the work.

Manager of the group Matt Clark said the work commenced in January and was largely carried out when trains ran on the Stafford to Crewe, so as to keep disruption to a minimum.

"It was great to see the first load of earth go across the bridge as it was the culmination of months of hard work and the team is very proud," he remarked.
