Women in Engineering Day took place on June 23rd - and Network Rail used the occasion to emphasise the importance of attracting more women to the industry.
The national event was established by the Women's Engineering Society, and it is intended to help raise the profile of engineering and encourage more females to consider a career in one of the roles it can offer.
Network Rail has set a target of increasing the proportion of women in the firm to 30 per cent in future - more than double the current figure of 14 per cent.
Director of diversity and inclusion at the organisation Loraine Martins said the rail industry is a great place to work, and that diversity and inclusion are important things for firms to consider.
"We know that where you have a diverse workforce you get greater creativity and innovation, and where you are inclusive you attract the best people," she commented.
