TramForward Congratulates Nottingham Tramlink on its 150% expansion

28 August 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Active Travel & Travel Planning, Bus & Coach, Transport Planning

With only 15 hours notice Nottingham Express Transit (NET) opened two new lines and doubled its length of route on 25 August 2015.

This followed a 44 month £580m Private Finance Initiative build project by Vinci Construction, partners, alongside Alstom, in the Nottingham Tramlink Consortium

Andrew Braddock, Chairman of the Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA), said: "This is a historic milestone in the development of Nottingham, a city with great foresight. They have now firmly joined the premier league of progressive urban communities with fixed transport links. The addition of 22 Alstom Citadis vehicles to the fleet increases the capacity of Nottingham Express Transit by almost 150% and enables an efficient "turn up and go" service throughout the day, with headways of just 3 minutes.  This is a model for how public transport should operate."

The extended tram network consists of 51 stops, and links directly with the existing NET Line One at Nottingham Station. The total tram network is 32km in length, serves seven Park & Ride sites and provides for up to 23 million passenger journeys a year.

Steve Barber, Vice President Elect of the LRTA and former Broxtowe Borough Council Member, added: "If you approach Nottingham from Derbyshire, Leicestershire or the motorway junctions you immediately come across a large Park & Ride site with trams every few minutes running at over 99% reliability. There is now no point in driving further. The aim is to make the Greater Nottingham area a good place to live, work, shop and do business."

Independent economic forecasters have predicted up to £300m per annum commercial gain for the conurbation from the extended tram network.
