New north Hull to Old Town bus service launched by Stagecoach

02 September 2015/Categories: CILT, Industry News, Bus & Coach

A new bus service will launch next month to provide direct connections between the Old Town and north Hull.

Simplibus, which is being run by Stagecoach, aims to bring more families into the heart of the city.

Its extra routes will also include an Orchard Park to east Hull city link and a new service for Kingswood. They will go live on Sunday, September 6.

Businesses in the Old Town welcomed the move, saying it would give the area's nightlife a boost.

Pub owner Alan Murphy, who runs WM Hawkes in Scale Lane and the Lion And Key in High Street, said: "It's fantastic. I'm sure the new services will have an effect on trade.

"We do get people who leave quite early to get the last bus. At night, not everyone knows someone who has a car and is willing to drive.

"We need that infrastructure in place so businesses can evolve naturally."

Launching Simplibus will involve an overhaul of existing Stagecoach services, with a change in route names. Its services will be numbered from one to 16.

Stagecoach East Midlands commercial manager Jon Donnelly said it would be a boost for the city.

He said: "It's all systems go for Simplibus.

"With new routes, a new numbering system and a new brand, we're confident Simplibus will offer customers a modern, reliable and efficient service, meeting the needs of as many commuters, shoppers, older people and those in education as possible."

The changes will be marked in a ceremony with the Lord Mayor, Councillor Anita Harrison, on Friday.

She believes passengers will benefit from the changes.

Cllr Harrison said: "I'm delighted to be helping launch the new Simplibus for Hull.

"The council has been working hard with Stagecoach to develop what we are confident will be a quality service for our city."

Stagecoach staff have already met hundreds of people to talk to them about Simplibus, in a series of ten meetings held across Hull in July and early August.

There will be three more information sessions next week.

Mr Donnelly said his company was aiming to provide a reliable service for those using it.

He said: "I'm confident Simplibus will prove to be an easy-to-use, punctual and accessible bus network, helping to meet people's transport needs, be they regular passengers or new visitors to Hull."

The changes were first announced last month, when Stagecoach bosses said they aimed to offer a fresh brand ahead of Hull's year as UK City of Culture 2017.
