Welsh government announces driver training investment

12 November 2015/Categories: Industry News

Significant investment in freight driver training has been announced by the Welsh government - and the move has been welcomed by trade bodies.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) says this is a recognition of its calls for support.

A serious skills shortage currently faces the industry, with estimates indicating that around 45,000 professional drivers are required to fill existing vacancies.

Tandem Transport Services, John Raymond Transport and Owens have also been lobbying the Department for Work and Pensions and the Welsh government for funding for driver licence acquisition.

Wales has confirmed it will train up to 180 unemployed people as lorry drivers - and the FTA attended the Logistics Careers Fair at Maindy Barracks in Cardiff to kick-start the process by encouraging people to apply via Jobcentre Plus.

Skills policy development manager at the FTA Sally Gilson said: "This is the culmination of months of lobbying by FTA for investment in training and we are pleased that the Welsh government recognises the importance of the freight industry."
