Air cargo growth flatlines

04 December 2015/Categories: Industry News

The latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reveal that air cargo growth continued to flatline in October.

Volumes measured by freight tonne km rose by just 0.5 per cent for the month, compared to the corresponding figures recorded a year ago.

Year-on-year expansion continued to fall back on September's faster rate of growth, with total cargo volumes for October 1.1 per cent lower than the peak of the upwards trend in 2014.

Tony Tyler, director-general and chief executive officer of IATA, said air cargo is experiencing a very difficult time.

Although there was some cause for optimism in the third quarter, it has since disappeared and the industry appears to be flatlining.

"Early signs of improvement in export orders may bode well for trade and air cargo but this is unlikely to prevent air cargo finishing 2015 on a low note," Mr Tyler commented.
