Seafood supply chain to have an overhaul

16 December 2015/Categories: Industry News

In general the seafood industry's supply chain is notoriously complex and technologically deprived but efforts are being made to make the industry's supply chain more transparent.

Businesses, NGOs and governments have been collaborating to improve this supply chain since the 90s, reports Green Biz.

However, with improved visibility can come unpleasant discoveries as have been found with global brand Nestle this year. The brand has been guilty of abuse of migrant labour among its seafood supply chain in Thailand.

This creates a need for NGOs and retailers to demand the ability to track the sources of seafood, its farming conditions and whose hands it passes through before it reaches the consumer.

CEO of BluWrap Mark Barnekow has compared the seafood industry to "thick San Francisco fog", meaning that it's difficult to see exactly what's happening behind it.

This fog hides negative impacts, as with the Nestle scandal, but it also hides issues such as overfishing, fraud and resource depletion.
