Government to restore Tadcaster bridges

11 January 2016/Categories: Industry News

The government has announced that it will fund £3.3 million towards the restoration of the Tadcaster Bridge and the construction of a temporary footbridge after flooding damaged the area.

The funding will allow North Yorkshire County Council to make repairs to the bridge, which is 300 years old and registered as a listed feature in Yorkshire.

Assessments are already underway and this funding follows a £40 million pledge made by the prime minister to improve flood defences in the the UK following Storm Eva, reports the Department for Transport.

The temporary footbridge hopes to provide those local to the area with easy access to both sides of river during repairs to the main bridge.

Ministerial flood recovery envoy for Yorkshire Robert Goodwill said that the repair of the bridge has been made a "national priority" due to it being an important route.

He commented: "I am determined to ensure I do everything I can to help and this is an important step in keeping the recovery effort on track in Yorkshire."
