Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has reported a 10 per cent rise in its online grocery sales for the last quarter and the start of this quarter.

The chain released a trading statement for the rise in sales recorded in the 15 weeks up to and including 9th January 2016, reports Logistics Manager.

Speaking on the increase, Mike Coupe, chief executive of Sainsbury's, said: "We had a record week in the quarter, delivering over 289,000 online orders."

Mr Coupe mentioned that the retailer has 101 Click and Collect sites across the UK, which may have been one of the main reasons for the spike in online sales.

There was an elevation in total retail sales for the brand overall, recording an uplift of 0.8 per cent.

Another potential reason for the increase in online sales is due to Sainsbury's' logistics as the company's distribution network is fully optimised to distribute large quantities of food to stores and it has a large fleet of vans to deliver orders to customers.
