Tesco facing serious problems with milk producers

28 January 2016/Categories: Industry News

Tesco has claimed it will be making a milk supply switch, which farmers threaten will result in a war between them and the retailer

Farmers for Action have accused the retailer of making plans to move a supply of 200 million litres of milk from Arla to Muller, reports Food Manufacture.

Arla and Muller are rival companies with regards to dairy co-operatives and farmers believe that this move will "decimate" the dairy industry.

However, the National Farmers Union has declined to comment on the situation, which is is regarding as mere "speculation".

The FFA has said in a statement that Tesco previously used to operate a half and half share between dairy companies and is clamouring for the retailer to reinstate this situation.

In a formal statement it said: "If not, a fight you will have - the rest of us have got nothing to lose."

Highlighting the severity of the situation, militant farmers have asked for support from prime minister David Cameron to help with the issue. They have said they will be marching to protest against the alleged move by Tesco in Westminster in March.
