Transport for London (TfL) and Islington Council have published plans to improve the safety of one of the busiest parts of the UK's capital.

The plans will tackle Highbury Corner and will include taking away the western side of its roundabout to replace it with a major new public space.

By doing this, it will allow a two-way traffic system to be introduced, which will significantly improve safety for all transport, but particularly for cyclists, who currently make up 22 per cent of the traffic using Highbury roundabout. The new plans will also introduce improved pedestrian crossings.

Part of TfL's £4 billion Road Modernisation Plan, it's hoped that the changes to Highbury Corner will help to transform the way the roads and public spaces are used in London.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "Highbury Corner heaves with hundreds of thousands of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians every day. It is a challenging area to navigate but the changes we are proposing will be a vast improvement."
