ScotRail Alliance confirms West Coast Mainline to reopen

15 February 2016/Categories: Industry News

Train services will be resuming over the flood-damaged Lamington Viaduct, according to confirmation from the ScotRail Alliance.

Work to reopen the viaduct, which is on the West Coast Mainline, is planned to finish ahead of schedule with a new expected finish date of Monday 22nd February.

The Victorian-built viaduct had been left severely weakened and close to falling into the River Clyde due to flood damage caused by Storm Frank over New Year's Eve.

Speaking on the repair work, Phil Verster, managing director of the ScotRail Alliance said: "The project has been a hugely challenging one involving working out in the Clyde through the worst of January's storms in a race against time to save the structure."

He continued: "By working together [with industry partners] we have been able to help limit disruption for passengers by providing diversionary routes for many of the affected services."

Work to repair the viaduct included installing new steel bearings on its damaged second pier and construction of a concrete plinth on top of the pier to support these bearings.
